On the Spitzerberg in eastern-most Austria lies the five-hectare wine estate founded by Dirk van der
Niepoort, the Portuguese "enfant terrible" of Port and Douro wines, and Dorli Muhr who, with her own
agency Wine&Partners, provides delicious public relations programmes and activities for wine and
culinary producers all over the world.
On this south-facing slope, only tedious, painstaking efforts are implemented in order to preserve its
old, cherished parcels – especially where the classic Blaufränkisch variety thrives.
The Spitzerberg is a wine site that had fallen into oblivion over the last 50 years. But in earlier times,
it was known as one of the best red wine sites in Austria. A western foothill of the Little Carpathians,
the Spitzerberg features soils of pure chalk with an extremely thin layer of humus. It is also a nature
conservation site. And because its climatic conditions and meagre soils are unique in Central Europe,
the Spitzerberg is particularly well known amongst biologists and plant researchers.
The Spitzerberg’s distinctive terroir, together with the spiciness of the Blaufränkisch variety and a
relatively small production from old vines result in wines that reflect the tastes of the wine duo
producers: elegant, not pompous, and with structure, length and plenty of freshness.
And not only do all of the wines vinified so far demonstrate this aim, but they also mirror the
character of their vintages as well.
2002 is a very streamlined wine marked by cool fruit.
2003 was a hot vintage requiring a very early harvest in order to prevent over-ripe jam tones.
2004 was probably one of the Spitzerberg´s most elegant and beautiful red wine vintages ever. The
wine is now opening up and showing wonderful maturity.
2005 required a rigorous selection in which any overripe grapes – as well as unripe ones - were
excluded from the bunches. As a result, the extremely small yield brought forth superb wine.
2006 is elegant, very harmonious and marked by refreshing fruit.
2007 is in the barrel for the time being, but is already showing a highly impressive character with
fantastic fruitiness, polished elegance and great length.
It is made of Blaufränkisch grapes from vines of up to 50 years old. A part of this wine had undergone
classic open vat fermentation, while another part underwent the ancient art of foot stamping and,
therefore, a very short maceration time; this process attempts to extract especially elegant and tightly
woven tannins.
"We want fine wines that are in no way powerful, exaggerated or lush," says Dorli Muhr, who is
responsible for vinification in addition to the harvesting of every parcel as well as processing and
maturing.
Dirk Niepoort, with his incomparable experience, selects the lots for the different blends.
CARNUNTUM is the classic entry wine made of 100% Blaufränkisch, showing very discreet use of
wood and plenty of cool fruitiness.
ROTE ERDE is a blend of Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Franc, carefully crafted.
SPITZERBERG is from a selection of the best barrels and the oldest Blaufränkisch sites. A tightly
woven, very elegant wine with captivating fruitiness and freshness.
PRELLENKIRCHEN is a white wine cuvée (95% Grüner Veltliner; 5% Riesling) with much cool and
minerally fruit and a firm acidity structure.
